Our History

King George V School, initially founded as Kowloon British College in 1894, began with 31 students in Tsim Sha Tsui but was destroyed by a typhoon after two years. It reopened in 1902 as Kowloon British School, primarily serving European expatriates, and later evolved into Central British School in 1936, recognized for its Bauhaus architecture. During the Sino-Japanese War, the school became a refuge and was repurposed by the Japanese as a hospital during their occupation. After World War II, it resumed operations in 1946, initially with limited resources, and in 1948 opened its doors to all nationalities, rebranding as King George V School and establishing a strong identity with three houses.

Throughout the decades, KGV expanded and modernized, growing to 1,200 students by 1997, just before Hong Kong's handover to China. The school was known for its academic and athletic excellence, winning numerous awards and producing talented athletes. Significant developments included the opening of new facilities, such as the swimming pool in 1979 and the Vertical Extension building in 1997. By 2013, KGV embraced the 21st century with award-winning Performing Arts and Science Blocks, alongside a Learning Resources Centre and Heritage Centre.

Having celebrated our 130th Anniversary and 100th Speech Night, we have decided to display our school's history and create some media to commemorate this timeline of King George V School. The media and records can be seen on our official KGV Celebrations Website!
